Court Orders 24-Year-Old to Prison for Stealing Artist’s Laptop

The Accra Circuit Court convicted a 24-year-old man named Boateng to 12 months in prison for stealing an HP laptop worth GH¢3,500 from an artist who had granted him a place to stay.

Boateng entered a guilty plea to the theft allegation, and the presiding judge, Susan Eduful, found him guilty, according to Graphic.com.gh.

The prosecution’s chief inspector, wisdom Alorwu, told the court that on May 5, 2024, Evans Kotey Djanie, an artist living in Teshie First Junction, had met Boateng, an Ashaiman resident.

Boateng contacted Djanie when he was receiving voice training in the Teshie Roman neighborhood. He claimed to have traveled from Koforidua to Accra for work but to have nowhere to stay.

Sensitively, Djanie brought Boateng home, let him stay in his room, and returned to his training. When Djanie got home at three in the morning, he found that Boateng had taken his laptop.

But on May 19, 2024, at around 8:00 p.m., Boateng made his way back to Teshie and met Djanie next to the Teshie Police Station. Not realizing that Djanie was his previous victim, Boateng asked for money from him.
Boateng was led away by Djanie, who pretended to be taking him to a mobile money vendor to get cash.

Boateng attempted to flee after realizing he had been recognized, but Djanie yelled for assistance. After that, Boateng was captured and brought to the police station.
