NAPO’s Comments on Kwame Nkrumah Spark Online Outrage
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party, added to the impression that he is conceited when he disregarded Kwame Nkrumah’s achievements to Ghana in favor of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
This led to a barrage of online support for Ghana’s first President, Nkrumah, and harsh criticism of Prempeh.
Prempeh argued that no president could match President Akufo-Addo’s accomplishments because he was comparing them to those of Nkrumah.
“Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”
Many individuals online criticized the NPP running mate and expressed support for Nkrumah when Prempeh’s remarks went viral. Individuals shared a 2019 John Mahama post that said, “Nkrumah never dies.”
Prempeh was also criticized by broadcaster Captain Smart, who said, “How can you disrespect Nkrumah like this? This guy exudes a lot of arrogance.
This nation can never be led by you.” Additionally, efforts were made to emphasize how factually incorrect Prempeh’s remarks were in light of Nkrumah’s contributions to Ghana and the black population worldwide.
Among other things, he founded the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, the University of Ghana, and free and obligatory primary education.
After being warned by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, not to undermine his ticket and to stop acting arrogantly, Prempeh made his contentious remarks.
