Many held him to his father’s skyscraper standards and doubted he could reach even ladder level after an indifference AFCON debut in Ghana 2008 when he was only 18.
Andre Ayew was pushed out of the senior national team Black Stars to the junior team Black Satellite but he made lemonade from the lemon thrown at him.
The seemingly demotion gingered him as he lead Ghana to win the African U20 Championship in Cameroon in February 2009.
He would go to write his name in the world football history books by leading the Ghana U20 team to win the FIFA U20 World Cup as captain, the first and only trophy by an African side.
In the grand finale against almighty Brazil himself like other attackers sacrificed their attacking duties to defend with their lives playing with 10 boys against Brazil’s 11.
The then 19-years-old took Ghana’s first penalty to inspire the other takers and eventually the team made history.
His performance at the U20 would push him back to the senior national team and he’s never looked back since.
Andre Ayew was instrumental in Ghana’s silver at AFCON 2010 and only missed out on the AFCON 2015 but sheer luck to Ivory Coast.
In 2010, he was a key player in Ghana’s team that dazzled everyone at the South Africa FIFA World Cup and made the quarterfinals, the highest African finish till Morocco’s 2022 semifinals heroics.
As a captain of Ghana Black Stars, he qualified the team to the 2022 World Cup at a time Ghanaians had little faith in the team.
Still playing active football at the highest level, leading Ghana to win the next AFCON next year in Ivory Coast isn’t a wild dream.
The above drafted contributions to the national team earned him the hall of fame status aside his individual honors like AFCON 2015 Top Scorer and Team Of The Tournament, CAF Team of The Year (2010, 2011, 2015).
In 2011 he was adjudged BBC African Footballer Of The Year and 3rd in CAF African Football Footballer Of The Year.
