2 Female KNUST students make sanitary pads from banana stem

Two female students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have produced sanitary pads from banana stem and cotton.

The two students behind this innovation are Emily Otoo-Quayson and Matilda Sampong.

Emily Otoo-Quayson is a level 400 Civil Engineering student while Matilda Sampong is Business Administration Student in her 2nd year.

According to them the motivation was to get an environmentally friendly sanitary pads unlike the usual ones produced from plastics with harmful dioxin.

“This dioxin is harmful to the female reproductive system so we decided to develop a banana sanitary pad to make the pads healthful.” – Miss Otoo-Quayson

Aside it health benefits, the Banana stem sanitary pads are cheaper than the regular ones in the market and will added rural folks who can’t afford the regular ones

According to statistics about 95% of girls in rural areas miss classes during this period and we thought to do something about this,” – she added
