Somalia rejects John Dramani Mahama as African Union envoy

Somalia has rejected John Mahama as an African Union envoy to broke a peace deal in their country between two political factions.

The former President of Ghana was rejected on the grounds that he has past ties with Kenya who support one faction so they can’t trust he wouldn’t be bias.

Somalia’s Foreign and International Cooperation Minister Mohamed Abdirazak says John Mahama has ties with Kenya and can’t be trust to be impartial.

In a letter to the African Union he said “It is indeed surprising that a candidate with extensive links with Kenya’s leadership has been chosen by the AU to facilitate talks on a political impasse partly engineered by those the Kenyan leadership has supported,”

“Given the politically sensitive nature of the task of a high representative in any case, I am certain you will appreciate the importance of any candidate for such a post to be seen as impartial and without any links to the region.”
