The former president of the United States, Donald Trump, is the target of criminal accusations brought by Jack Smith, a special counsel for the United States who is known for successfully prosecuting cases against war criminals, organized crime figures, and corrupt law enforcement.

Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland last November to oversee two Justice Department investigations involving Trump, has made history by becoming the first federal prosecutor to obtain an indictment against a sitting or past president, albeit he is not the first prosecutor to do so.

In April, Manhattan District Attorney Bragg filed 34 criminal counts against Trump for falsifying business documents relating to hush money given to a porn star before the 2016 presidential election.

Smith was raised in Clay, a New York suburb of Syracuse. He graduated from Liverpool High School in 1987.

He got his Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude from the State University of New York, Oneonta, in 1994, and his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1995. In the Sex Crimes and Domestic Violence Units of the New York County District Attorney’s office, he served as an Assistant District Attorney after receiving his degree.

 

In his decades-long tenure as a prosecutor, Jack Smith has presided over a number of high-profile cases.

He has filed cases against gang members who were ultimately found guilty of killing New York City police officers and prosecuted a sitting US senator.

Smith has recently brought war crimes cases to The Hague. He handled cases concerning corruption specifically as the US justice department’s chief of public integrity, prosecuting well-known Republicans and Democrats. Smith has just been appointed as the special counsel for the Trump investigations.
