GoFundMe: Jesus Paredes Dies In a Fatal Sonoma County Crash

Jesus Paredes, 19, of Sebastopol was identified Thursday by the Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office as the person who died Sunday in a suspected DUI crash.

Around 11:20 a.m. Sunday, Paredes was riding in the front passenger seat of a Toyota Camry driven by Pedro Lopez Santos, 18, of Healdsburg.

The California Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation indicated Lopez Santos was speeding as they traveled southbound on Oak Grove Avenue near Highway 116 in the unincorporated area of Graton.

The Camry went off the roadway and collided with a tree, causing major damage to the car and fatal injuries to Paredes, the CHP said.

Paredes was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Lopez Santos was taken to a hospital for injuries suffered in the crash.

Officers recognized signs and symptoms of suspected alcohol intoxication in Lopez Santos and placed him under arrest, CHP Officer David deRutte said.

Upon his release from the hospital, Lopez Santos was booked into Sonoma County jail.

As of Thursday, he was in custody with his bail set at $100,000. Arrest charges included felony DUI causing injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, great bodily injury in the commission of a felony, driving without a license, enhanced DUI penalty for high BAC or refusal to be tested, and causing harm while driving under the influence.

By Thursday night, $1,440 was raised toward the $5,000 goal for his funeral expenses.
