Ghanaians reacts bitterly to the Mobile Money tax imposed by NPP Government

The Government of Ghana has introduced an electronic transaction tax known as E-levy.

With this tax, all electronic money transaction in Ghana will be taxed by the Government as read by the Finance Minister in the presentation of the 2022 Budget.

After considerable deliberations, Government has decided to place a levy on all electronic transactions to widen the tax net and rope in the informal sector. This shall be known as the “Electronic Levy or E-Levy.”

“Electronic transactions covering mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments and inward remittances will be charged at an applicable rate of 1.75%, which shall be borne by the sender except inward remittances, which will be borne by the recipient.” – Ken Ofori Atta

This tax has been met with anger by Ghanaians especially when it’s coming from the Government who won election with promises that they will abolished nuisance taxes.

Below are some reactions from Ghanaians;

“GRA went cashless not long ago so now if you dey pay your tax through MOMO you’ll be paying tax on your tax. Make it make sense!

Herh Ghana!”

@K_ekeli
The MoMo tax is insane. It’s really going to affect businesses and ordinary Ghanaians. Imagine a trader in Kumasi paying Gh1,750 on Ghc100,000 to a supplier in Accra. This means that it’s even cheaper to travel from Kumasi to Accra and back by flight to pay your supplier.

This government be fraud pass. The Ghana Revenue Authority changed their systems and hence you have to pay your taxes electronically via momo. Now the government has placed taxes on momo transactions meaning while paying your taxes, you will actually be paying taxes on you taxes.
