Gene Deitch: Legendary director of ‘Tom and Jerry‘ dies amid coronavirus outbreak

Tom and Jerry director Gene Deitch has passed away at the age of 95.

The Oscar-winning illustrator passed away on Thursday night at his apartment in Prague.

Gene directed 13 episodes of beloved children’s cartoon Tom and Jerry and some episodes from the cartoon Popeye.

Earlier in his life, Gene worked as a draftsman for North American Aviation before being drafted for the military and entering pilot training.

After being discharged for medical reasons, he settled down in Prague in 1959, where his career took off.

He won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for his movie Munro in 1960. He was nominated for the same award twice more in 1964.

Gene is survived by his wife and three sons from his first marriage, all of whom are cartoonists.
