Food To Avoid High Cholesterol

Hypercholesterolemia, also called high cholesterol, is the presence of high levels of cholesterol in the blood. It is a form of hyperlipidemia (high levels of lipids in the blood), hyperlipoproteinemia (high levels of lipoproteins in the blood), and dyslipidemia (any abnormalities of lipid and lipoprotein levels in the blood).

Food To Avoid High Cholesterol

While some cholesterol in your diet is fine, lots of saturated fat isn’t. Diets high in saturated fat are linked to increased blood cholesterol and heart disease risk.

Experts recommend limiting or avoiding the following “unhealthy” high-cholesterol foods, which are also high in saturated fat.

According to the National Cancer Institute, these are the top food sources of cholesterol among people living in the U.S.: (3)

  1. Eggs and egg mixed dishes — 25 percent
    2. Chicken and chicken mixed dishes — 13 percent
    3. Beef, beef mixed dishes, and burgers — 11 percent
    4. Full-fat cheese — 4 percent
    5. Sausage, hot dogs, bacon and ribs — 4 percent
    6. Fish and fish mixed dishes — 3 percent
    7. Grain-based desserts — 3 percent
    8. Dairy dessert — 3 percent
    9. Pasta and pasta dishes — 3 percent
    10. Pizza — 3 percent
    11. Mexican mixed dishes — 3 percent
    12. Cold cuts — 3 percent
    13. Reduced-fat milk — 2.5 percent
    14. Pork and pork mixed dishes — 2 percent
    15. Shrimp and shrimp mixed dishes — 2 percent
