The Drogheda community is mourning the loss of Gerard Gerry Carroll, a highly regarded businessman and athlete from Beechgrove. Gerry, who passed away after a brief illness, was a cherished figure known for his contributions to the town.
Gerry Carroll leaves behind a legacy of safety and service, having operated a coach company based in Ballymakenny, where he dedicated himself to transporting thousands of schoolchildren safely to and from school. His commitment earned him the gratitude of both parents and children.
Preceded in death by his wife Bridget, Gerry is survived by his children Jimmy, Patrick, Irene, Joe, and Deirdre, as well as his grandchildren Caoimhe, Aoibheann, and Ellen. His impact extended to his wider family, friends, and fellow athletes.
Gerry was not only a successful businessman but also a gifted runner. Tributes have poured in from various corners of the county, highlighting his remarkable athletic achievements and dedication to the Drogheda & District Athletic Club. His passion for running inspired those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Ratoath AC expressed deep sorrow at Gerry Carroll’s passing and extended condolences to his family, friends, and fellow members of the Drogheda and District AC. Gerry was known for his early morning 10K runs along the Boyne boardwalk, serving as a testament to the benefits of running at any age.
Gerry’s involvement in other sports clubs was also acknowledged, particularly his role in transporting players and fans to fixtures. His commitment to O’Raghallaighs GAA club was especially noted, with many recalling his dedication to the team.
In addition to his athletic and business accomplishments, Gerry Carroll was celebrated for his warm and friendly demeanor. He was a familiar face behind the wheel of his bus, ensuring the safety of countless children during their school years.

Gerry Carroll’s Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday at 11:30 am in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, with a live broadcast available on www.saintpetersdrogheda.ie. He will be laid to rest in Newtown Cross Lawns Cemetery. In lieu of family flowers, donations may be made to the ICU at James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown.
