Caleb Wise Dies in Fatal South Carolina shooting
Tragic Shooting Claims the Lives of Three Promising Teens in South Carolina
South Carolina was plunged into sorrow on Monday, September 25, when three young schoolboys, Caleb Wise, 16, Jakobe Fanning, 16, and Dre’Von Riley, 17, fell victim to a tragic shooting incident. This heartbreaking event has left the community grappling with grief and seeking answers.
Law enforcement authorities swiftly took action, apprehending 17-year-olds Karlos Damon Gibson and Jahkeem Griffin, alongside an unnamed 14-year-old suspect. These individuals now face a litany of charges, including three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and possession of a deadly weapon during a violent crime, according to reports from the NY Post.
The victims of this senseless tragedy were identified by Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford as 16-year-old Jakobe Fanning, 17-year-old Dre’Von Riley, and 16-year-old Caleb Wise, all of whom were students at Eau Claire High School.
At a press conference held to address the incident, Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrests and was joined by County Councilwoman Gretchen D. Barron, Richland County School District One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon, State Representative Kambrell Garvin, and Pastor Dr. Aaron Bishop. The gathering emphasized the importance of unity in preventing such senseless tragedies and the need for the community to come together.
Sheriff Lott conveyed, “It takes a village to raise a young person. We have a strong village of educators, community leaders, and elected officials, but we need everyone to come together to help save our young people. We are losing too many.”
While this devastating incident has left a community in mourning, it also serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle to address youth violence. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the community to combat such violence and protect its youth.
The motivation behind the tragic shooting was revealed during the news conference. According to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, the incident stemmed from a burglary that occurred a couple of years ago. However, the loss of these young lives underscores the urgency of addressing conflicts without resorting to violence, leaving a community forever marked by the void left behind by these promising teenagers.
